Album Review – That Says It All – by Gavin Marriott
Joy Adams is well known as a top New Zealand country singer who writes clever
songs about both funny and sad situations. But to musos she is known for her
clear diction, accents when appropriate, the use of dynamics which few singers
master and excellent breathing control. It is these qualities that endears Joy
to you as you listen to the 15 tracks of her latest CD ‘That Says It All’.
This is her 20th studio album over 30 years
of recording and this album doesn’t disappoint. In fact I would rate it
alongside any international country album currently. The CD starts off with the
title track, a bouncy country number.
The next track is one that you will listen to over and over. It is an Irish
classic written by Ben Sands that has always been a favourite of mine as popular
by Foster & Allan. For her rendition, Joy brought in one of the world’s best
accordion players from Scotland, David Vernon to back her. They have performed
together in New Zealand and what a combination. ‘We All Need A Hug’ is my album
favourite and I am sure will be yours.
‘Everyone But Me’ shows off those vocal qualities I mention earlier. There is
a variety on this CD and Joy knows what we like. ‘Tiny Blue Transistor Radio’
will be known by those from the 60s and sung along to. ‘Sweetheart’ was a
favourite hit for Englebert Humperdinck and here Joy gives an older style softer
blend with her own backing vocals.
‘Party In Heaven’ was a song Joy wrote whilst on her way to her brother’s
funeral and again another catchy song with her usual brilliant lyrics with
excellent backing from her country band.
‘Best Of Friends’ is a popular Irish ballad and here Joy asks her friend
Dennis Marsh to tell a story on top during part of the song. For the refrain she
used double tracked vocals. This arrangement is so good it could get on country
charts.
‘Still I Wonder’ is an original song that is again catchy with honky tonk
piano and double tracked vocals. ‘According To The Lie’ features John Grenell
doing backing vocals in the chorus. A typical sad country song as is ‘Let’s Make
A Memory’.
I am glad when any artist performs ‘Blue Smoke’. It was the first commercial
recording from New Zealand by Ruru Karaitiana. Joy has gone back to country
basics in this track and got in a mandolin and steel guitar player. These were
well utilised in ‘After All’. We get another Irish style classic again from Dave
Sheriff ‘I Love You To The Moon And Back’ and the finale ‘She’s Got You’ which
is quite a different style for Joy leaning to a cabaret ballad but still keeping
it country.
One of the best country albums released in New Zealand. Don’t miss out on
it.
Over the years, Joy has been actively involved with radio broadcasting -initially with AM1206 Community Radio in Hamilton, where she hosted the very popular Rock’n’Country Show from 1993 – 2005. These shows gave her a platform to play a large variety of Independent Country Music from NZ and all around the World.
In May 2021, she returned to the airwaves hosting shows for the NZ Country Music Radio Network.
NZCMR Station owner John de Burgh encouraged her to do some shows so with a huge variety of her own personal music collection plus access to the station’s library, Joy now presents three – two hour shows a week.
Monday is set aside for NZ and Australian Artists only.
Tuesday and Wednesday are set aside for Indie and Classic Country from all around the World. You can expect to hear music you haven’t heard in years or music you will never hear anywhere else.
Each show goes to air at Midday NZ time and are recorded live and replayed early hours of Thursday and Saturday mornings 1.00 a.m. – 3.00 am (NZ) time which suits overseas listeners a lot better.
Joy Adams is one of New Zealands’ best known Country Recording Artists. Blessed with a natural flair for singing, song writing and comedy, she regularly entertains at Clubs, Festivals and Showcases around N.Z. Australia and further afield.
In 1990 Joy won the Songwriters Section of the Auckland Country Music Awards and then went on to win the coveted title of NZ Country Music Association Songwriter of the Year for 1990. Many more awards have followed, both for singing and song writing and to date, Joy has released a total of twenty one albums – most of which feature a great mix of classic country, easy listening, comedy and some of her award winning original songs.
In 2008 Joy was awarded the National Female Country Artist of the Year at a star studded event in Hamilton, NZ organised by the Pro-Am Country Music Association.
In 1993 Joy was introduced to radio and was asked to present her own show for AM1206 Community Radio in Hamilton, NZ She spent 12 years with them focusing on the promotion of mainly NZ, Australian and Independent Artists from all around the world but adding a sprinkling of her personal favourite classic Country Artists into the mix for a lovely balance. These shows were hugely popular and a number of very successful concerts were promoted in the district through the station.
In 2002, Joy travelled to Nashville, Tennessee where good friend and Grand Ole Opry star Ernie Ashworth invited her to appear as special guest on the Midnite Jamboree. This show is the second longest running show in the history of radio in the USA and is broadcast live over WSM Radio and via the internet.
While in Nashville she learnt that I Know You Don’t Love Me No More – the song she had released to radio on Hotdisk UK a couple of weeks prior had hit the #1 spot on the European Media Services Top 40 Charts which was a fantastic achievement.
At that time, she was the first Australasian Artist to achieve that feat.
Joy has travelled extensively over the last few years performing all around New Zealand, Australia, USA, Belgium, Germany, Denmark & Norway.
TV audiences in NZ may have seen her on Southland TV’s ‘Y’all Come’ country show broadcast on the Sky Network and she has also appeared on a number of Danish TV Shows.
After organizing a number of mini tours and events for overseas independent artists, Joy decided to set up Stagecoach Promotions Ltd in March 2004 to promote her first major tour for American Entertainer Kenny Dale throughout the North Island which was very successful.
Kenny was a huge name in NZ during the late 1970’s, early eighties with songs like ‘Bluest Heartache Of The Year, Two Hearts Tangled In Love etc… This was definitely a major highlight in her career working alongside an artist of his calibre.
Always keen to lend a hand to a good cause, Joy has helped the Stroke Foundation Waikato and the Huntly Rotary Club with their fundraising efforts by organising concerts and introducing many NZ and overseas artists to the area. The NZ Rotary Country Charity Concerts raised in excess of $40,000 for various causes.
Joy was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary of Huntly for her fundraising efforts. She was also presented with the Savemart Community Service Award from the Child Cancer Foundation in 2013 for helping raise money and awareness for them.
On the 20th September 2014, Joy launched her own Charity – StarBuddy Charitable Trust which raises money for groups, charities and organisations associated with children with special needs, disability and severe illness. St John Ambulance also receive donations from the Trust. The Trust arranges to give children special treats and the money stays in the town where the money is raised wherever possible.
